Desertification threatens province

SPAIN is renowned for being one of the driest regions in Europe, in particular the south. In fact, Almeria is one of the driest areas in the country, if not Europe, with 70 per cent of its land already affected. Drought, intensive farming of crops or cattle, tourism and construction are believed to be the main causes of the problem in the region. Although 2006 has been and gone, many people still do not know that it was the United Nations International Year of Deserts and Desertification. According to the UNs figures, one third of Spain is or will soon become desert. As water shortages increase, this will have dramatic effects on agricultural activities and tourism in certain areas. Market gardening is one of the most important industries in Almeria and along with tourist complexes requires huge amounts of water.

22nd Clásica Almería

Giuseppe Muraglia (Acqua & SIapone) won Sunday's 22nd edition of the Clsica Almera one-day race, running from Puebla de Vicar to to Andlausian city of Almera over 186 km. The Italian had faster legs than Russian Eduard Vorganov (Karpin Galicia) and Spain's Vicente Ballester (Fuerteventura-Canarias) and Juan Olmo (Andaluca-Caja Sur) in the four-man sprint theat determined the winner.

Many attacks came very early into the race, and a breakaway group of 13 riders formed on the second ascent of the day, the Cat. 3 Alto de Las Hortichuelas. Among the escapees were Iigo Landaluce, Joan Horrach and David Millar, but all were chased don in the next climb Campohermoso. More moves followed, with the same Landaluce, Ramn Troncoso, Juan Olmo and Italian Andrea Masciarelli as main protagonists. But the good one came with just 30 km.

Almeria edge out Alicante in Friendship Cup

The Friendship Cup lawn bowls competition took place on 26th and 27th February 2007 at the Indalo Bowls Club writes Bryan Redington. This is played each year, normally between representative squads, from the Alicante, Almería and Malaga areas. Unfortunately Malaga was unable to provide a squad on this occasion, so the Alicante and Almería teams played each other twice. Each squad comprised 24 players arranged as 6 Fours, with the Almería area providing the 24 as 2 teams of 4 from each of three of the local clubs. Barry Latham, an assistant Director of Lawn bowls in Spain, captained the Alicante squad, and the Almería squad was captained by John Colquhoun, who organised the event, and is Captain of the Indalo Club.

On the first day (afternoon) with some good wins balanced out by heavy losses and other close games honours were even at 6 points (3 games) each with a shot difference slightly in favour of the Almería team.
